Morrisons first UK supermarket to roll out AI self-checkouts

Morrisons has officially rolled out AI-powered self-checkouts in 200 stores, becoming the first UK supermarket to introduce the technology. The system, developed by retail technology firm Everseen, allows customers to correct missed or mis-scanned items themselves via the checkout screen, potentially speeding up queues.

How the AI checkout system works

Using real-time computer vision, the AI checks scanned items against the basket contents and prompts the shopper if it identifies a potential error. Customers can then resolve the issue directly on the screen without needing staff assistance, streamlining the checkout process.

The rollout follows a successful trial earlier this year and is backed by a long-term partnership between Morrisons and Everseen. Morrisons has not yet revealed which stores will receive the technology or when the rollout will be completed.

Francesca Bezoari, Morrisons store support office director, said the new system “enables us to provide the fast and seamless checkout experience our customers want”. She added that this can now be achieved “while simultaneously equipping our colleagues to maintain the exceptional service that Morrisons is known for”.

Joe White, chief executive of Everseen, said: “The best AI solutions deliver measurable results without compromising the customer experience. Our Vision AI platform enables Morrisons to improve its satisfaction scores, proving that operational performance and customer service aren’t competing priorities.”

AI trolleys and the future of shopping

The move comes as Morrisons becomes the first UK retailer to deploy Instacart’s AI-powered Caper smart trolleys. David McIntosh, Chief Connected Stores Officer at Instacart, said: “Caper smart trolleys represent a new era for in-store grocery shopping - one where the physical store is as intelligent and personalised as the best online experience.”

McIntosh added: “Customers want technology that helps them stay on budget and discover products they love, and Caper smart trolleys deliver both, directly in the aisle. We're proud to bring this to the UK for the first time through our partnership with Morrisons, who share our belief that technology should make the weekly shop not just easier, but genuinely more enjoyable.”

The AI checkout rollout and the introduction of smart trolleys signal Morrisons' push to integrate advanced technology across its stores, aiming to improve both efficiency and customer satisfaction. The company has not yet specified a timeline for completing the checkout rollout, but the partnership with Everseen is described as long-term, indicating a sustained commitment to the technology.
