Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has become the first in the country to introduce Voice-Care, a hands-free voice recognition system designed to improve patient safety during surgery. The technology is being piloted at Stepping Hill Hospital, allowing surgical teams to complete critical safety checklists simply by speaking, which eliminates manual paperwork and ensures 100 per cent compliance with World Health Organisation (WHO) surgical safety standards.
The Voice-Care system acts like a digital co-pilot in the operating room, a setting that can often be distracting. It prevents critical steps from being forgotten, reduces the risk of human error, and removes the need for medical staff to record WHO Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) notes manually. The system supports the multidisciplinary team in delivering the WHO SSC, which in turn should reduce intraoperative 'Never events'—errors that should not happen and that compromise patient safety.
Streamlining Documentation and Saving Time
Voice-Care also makes documentation swifter, easier, and more streamlined, saving time for surgical staff to focus on their clinical work. The pilot marks a significant step forward in adopting innovative technology in surgical settings, with Stockport NHS being the first trust in the country to use it in this way.
Dr Nigel Roberts, associate divisional director for Theatres, Critical Care and Anaesthetics at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, said: "It's very exciting to be the very first NHS surgical team in the country to use this system. We see this new technology as a real game-changer, and we're confident it will have a hugely positive effect on ensuring the best possible surgical safety standards in our surgical theatres."
