Birmingham Children's Hospital Unveils UK's Largest MediCinema
A transformative new cinema facility has officially opened at Birmingham Children's Hospital, promising to make a massive difference for young patients and their families facing extended hospital stays. The MediCinema, launched after a successful £1 million fundraising appeal, represents a significant enhancement to the hospital's support services.
A Sanctuary Away from the Wards
This 84-seat cinema, now the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, has been specifically designed to create a welcoming environment where patients and their loved ones can enjoy quality time together outside the clinical setting of the wards. For families who sometimes spend weeks or even months in hospital, this space offers a crucial respite.
The MediCinema is housed within the hospital's former lecture theatre and features:
- Eighty-four purpose-built, movie-style seats
- Full accessibility for wheelchairs and hospital beds
- Accommodation for necessary medical equipment
First-Hand Experience from Patients
Ten-year-old Ella Lowton-Smith from Atherstone was among the first to experience the new facility during the opening screening of Disney and Pixar's Hoppers. Ella has been a heart patient at Birmingham Children's Hospital since birth, undergoing her first surgery at just five days old after being diagnosed with truncus arteriosus—a serious cardiac condition.
Currently hospitalized due to a heart infection requiring intravenous antibiotics, Ella's mother Becky shared: "We've been in hospital for just over two weeks. It's really tough for Ella to be away from home and from her little sister Olivia, so to have somewhere they can go and spend time together, away from the bedside, is so special."
Becky added: "Ella is a massive movie fan and we love going to the cinema as a family. We've been following the progress of the MediCinema for some time, so to be here for the first screening is amazing. She's been so excited about it and I know she'll talk about it for weeks."
Healthcare Professionals Celebrate the Impact
Daljit Athwal, chief nursing and midwifery officer at Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust, expressed profound enthusiasm about the new facility: "To see the excitement on the faces of the children at the screening was pure magic. The MediCinema is already making a massive difference."
Athwal emphasized the broader health implications: "We know lengthy stays in hospital can impact an entire family's physical and mental health, with patients often feeling isolated from their parents, siblings and friends. This often affects their overall wellbeing and recovery. Our MediCinema will help change that and we feel so privileged to be able to provide this opportunity for our children."
Dual-Purpose Facility
The MediCinema will operate with a flexible schedule to maximize its utility:
- Evening and weekend screenings primarily for patients and their families
- Daytime availability for staff training and educational purposes
This innovative approach ensures the space serves multiple functions within the hospital community while maintaining its primary focus on patient and family wellbeing. The opening marks a milestone in enhancing the holistic care environment at one of the country's leading pediatric hospitals.
