A Derbyshire mother is using her personal experience of premature birth to highlight the importance of community support networks as World Prematurity Day approaches this November.
A Family's Premature Journey
Beth Wheatley, founder of the popular Lots for Tots brand, understands firsthand the challenges families face when welcoming a premature baby. Her son Ezra arrived six weeks early, weighing just 3lbs 11oz, though fortunately he didn't require neonatal care.
"We were incredibly fortunate that Ezra didn't need to go onto neonatal care," Beth reflects. "That experience really opened my eyes to how strong and resilient families who go through that time are. I have huge respect for those parents and the professionals who support them."
Building Community Through Business
Now a lively three-year-old and younger brother to Elijah, Ezra's early arrival inspired Beth to strengthen support systems for local families. Through her Lots for Tots enterprise - which includes a parenting magazine, awards scheme, and new nursery in Hilton - she's created platforms that connect parents across the region.
"Everything we do at Lots for Tots comes back to one word - community," Beth explains. "Our magazine supports families day to day, our awards shine a light on the incredible people and organisations supporting them and our nursery helps parents feel connected right from the start."
Celebrating Local Support Networks
The annual Lots for Tots Awards attract thousands of nominations, celebrating everything from early years educators and healthcare professionals to volunteers and local charities across Derbyshire.
"World Prematurity Day is a reminder of how much families depend on the network around them," Beth adds. "Across Derbyshire we're lucky to have so many people who genuinely care and at Lots for Tots, we're proud to help bring those people together."
World Prematurity Day will be marked on November 17, serving as an important reminder of the strength shown by premature babies and their families, and the vital role community support plays in helping them thrive.
