Study Reveals Brits Dedicate 12 Years to Morning Routines

A new study has found that the average British adult spends a staggering 12 years of their life on morning routines. The research, conducted by the sleep brand Emma, surveyed 2,000 UK adults to uncover how much time is devoted to activities such as showering, eating breakfast, and commuting.

Showering, Breakfast, and Commuting Top the List

According to the study, the most time-consuming morning activities include showering (which takes up an average of 15 minutes per day), eating breakfast (10 minutes), and commuting (45 minutes). Over a lifetime, this amounts to 4.5 years spent in the shower, 3 years eating breakfast, and 4.5 years commuting.

Regional Variations in Morning Habits

The study also highlighted regional differences. People in London spend the most time on their morning routine, averaging 2 hours and 15 minutes, while those in the South West are the quickest, at just 1 hour and 30 minutes. Brummies fall somewhere in the middle, with an average of 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Impact on Productivity and Well-being

Experts suggest that optimizing morning routines can boost productivity and mental health. Dr. Lindsay Browning, a sleep expert, commented: "A consistent morning routine can set a positive tone for the day, reducing stress and improving focus." However, she cautioned against overscheduling, as it can lead to anxiety.

Generational Differences Emerge

The research also found that younger Brits (aged 18-24) spend longer on their morning routines compared to older generations, with an average of 2 hours and 10 minutes. In contrast, those aged 55 and above spend just 1 hour and 20 minutes. This is partly due to longer grooming and social media use among younger people.

Tips for a More Efficient Morning

To save time, the study recommends preparing the night before, such as laying out clothes and packing lunch. Additionally, limiting phone use can shave off up to 20 minutes from the routine. Emma's spokesperson noted: "Small changes can reclaim hours over a lifetime."
