Tony Bellew Awarded Honorary Doctorate from Edge Hill

Boxing Legend Honored for Mental Health Work

Former world champion boxer Tony Bellew has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Edge Hill University in recognition of his services to sport and mental health support. The Liverpool-born fighter, who held the WBC cruiserweight title from 2016 to 2017, was celebrated for his two-decade legacy both in the ring and as a mental health campaigner.

Bellew, whose professional record stands at 30 wins with 20 knockouts, said: "I'm incredibly honoured to receive this recognition from Edge Hill University. Chasing your dreams through hard work and faith in yourself is a value I share with Edge Hill so to be acknowledged in this way means a great deal."

A Career Beyond Boxing

Bellew was a three-time ABA heavyweight champion and represented Great Britain as an amateur. He also starred as Ricky Conlan in the Creed film franchise and now works as a commentator for DAZN and talkSPORT. Since retiring, he has become a prominent mental health advocate, sharing his personal struggles on Edge Hill's Edge Ahead podcast alongside his wife Rachael, and supporting campaigns such as DrinkiQ, Men's Sheds, and Soccer Aid for UNICEF.

Professor Jay Cullen, executive dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, said: "Tony Bellew's journey, pursuing his dream to become a world champion boxer and then becoming a champion of mental health awareness, is exactly the kind of achievement we hope will inspire our students graduating this week. By awarding Tony an Honorary Doctorate, we recognise his outstanding contribution to boxing and his commitment to breaking down stigma around men's mental health."

Inspiration for Graduates

The honorary doctorate was conferred during the university's graduation ceremonies. Bellew added: "I'm proud to be standing alongside these inspiring graduates and I hope in turn they see me as proof that anything is possible with dedication and belief." Edge Hill University's next Open Day is scheduled for Saturday, August 15.
