The Food Standards Agency has issued a 'do not consume' warning after veterinary medicine was discovered in milk stocked by major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda and Morrisons. Graham's Family Dairy is recalling semi-skimmed milk sold in one pint, one litre and two litre sizes, all with a use-by date of July 31, 2026. The recall applies to England only.
Health risk for antibiotic-allergic individuals
The FSA warned that drinking the contaminated milk poses a possible health risk for anyone allergic to antibiotics, including penicillin. The presence of veterinary medicines, including antibiotics, may make the product unsafe to consume. The agency advises consumers who have purchased the affected products not to drink them and to return them to the store for a full refund.
Graham's Family Dairy apologises
Graham's Family Dairy, Scotland's largest independent dairy company, issued a recall notice and apologised to customers. The family-run business, which supplies milk, butter, yogurts, ice cream and other dairy products to supermarkets across the UK, stated: 'At Grahams Family Dairy we believe that the quality of our products and the safety of our consumers is paramount.'
The company added: 'This is a precautionary measure we have taken as there is a small risk a trace level of antibiotics may be present in the milk which could cause a reaction to consumers with an allergy to antibiotics. If you have purchased any of these products, please do not consume. Instead, please return the milk to the store purchased from for refund. We apologise for this issue and would like to reassure our customers no other Grahams Family Dairies products or Use By Dates are affected.'
