The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed automatic £100 increases in Winter Fuel Payments for state pensioners aged over 80, with payments ranging from £200 to £300 for the winter of 2026 to 2027.
If you were born on or before 27 June 1960, you could receive between £100 and £300 to help with heating bills. The exact amount depends on your date of birth and circumstances during the qualifying week, which runs from 21 to 27 September 2026.
Payment amounts and eligibility
According to the DWP, you will get either £200 if you were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if you were born before 28 September 1946. This represents a £100 increase for the oldest pensioners, who previously received £200.
The DWP stated: "You’ll get a letter in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get, if you’re eligible. If you do not get a letter but think you’re eligible, check if you need to make a claim."
Automatic payments and claims
Age UK explained that if you or your partner claims Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance or income-related Employment and Support Allowance, the payment should go to the main claimant automatically. However, if you have never received a Winter Fuel Payment before, or if you claim Universal Credit, you might need to make a claim. Additionally, if you receive Child Tax Credit or Working Tax Credit, you must make a claim.
Age UK added: "You should receive your payment between mid-November and Christmas. Call the winter fuel payment helpline on 0800 731 0160 if you have any enquiries or you don't receive your payment."
Scam warning and further information
The DWP also warned about potential scams: you may get calls, emails or messages pretending to be from a government service. If you receive a message asking for personal details such as bank details or passwords, this could be a scam.
Eligibility extends to those born on or before 27 June 1960 who usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. For those who need to claim, the helpline number is 0800 731 0160, and payments are expected between mid-November and Christmas.
