Drivers over the age of 60 are facing a £459 charge to remain on the roads, according to new data from the car insurance comparison platform Confused.com. While this figure represents the average cost for this age group, the data reveals that drivers in their 60s are actually benefiting from the lowest premiums of any age bracket.
Why Over-60s Pay Less
The reduced cost is largely attributed to experience. Confused.com explains that drivers in their 60s typically have more years on the road behind them, making them statistically less likely to be involved in accidents or make claims. This lower risk profile is reflected in their insurance premiums.
However, several factors can still influence the final price. For instance, holding a job that is considered high risk or one that requires extensive driving can increase costs. Conversely, retirement can have a positive effect, especially if it means driving fewer miles. On average, retired drivers paid £351, according to the data.
Other Factors Affecting Premiums
Location also plays a significant role. Living in a rural area with low rates of vehicle theft tends to be less risky than residing in built-up areas, which can lower premiums. Additionally, the importance of a no-claims bonus cannot be overstated. Confused.com notes: "Drivers in their 60s tend to have had more years on the road to build up their no-claims bonus. The longer you've gone without claiming on your car insurance, the bigger your no-claims bonus is."
Matt Crole Rees from Confused.com commented: "Being in your 60s might mean you've got years of driving experience under your belt. The good news is it also means that insurers generally see you as lower-risk and might reward you with cheaper insurance. That doesn't mean there aren't further savings to be made though. Comparing prices is the easiest way to see what savings are out there to be had and it only takes a few minutes."
Legal Requirements and Future Costs
In the UK, car insurance is a strict legal requirement under the Road Traffic Act. The minimum legal cover is Third Party insurance, which covers injury or damage you cause to other people, vehicles, animals, or property. This requirement applies to all drivers, regardless of age.
While those in their 60s enjoy lower premiums, this may not last. Aviva, a major insurer, stated: "Older drivers are often careful and experienced drivers. However, insurers generally classify them as higher risk. This will just be one of many factors considered when calculating premiums. Your car insurance payments may increase in your seventies and beyond."
