The Met Office has issued an amber warning for extreme heat covering Birmingham, with very high temperatures expected on Thursday (August 13). The warning, which also affects the Midlands and southern regions, indicates that temperatures could reach 37 or even 38 Celsius in parts of the east, southeast, and the Midlands.
According to the Met Office, the hot weather could lead to impacts on transport, infrastructure, and health. The warning follows a warm night and a spell of very hot weather affecting England on Thursday.
Birmingham's Forecast for Wednesday and Thursday
For Birmingham specifically, Wednesday is forecast to be dry with lots of strong sunshine, with temperatures rising rapidly during the morning. High-level cloud will make the skies a little hazy at times, and it will feel very warm and locally hot, with a maximum temperature of 32 °C.
Wednesday night is expected to be dry with a few clear spells, and another warm night is likely, with a minimum temperature of 17 °C. High-level cloud will lead to a bright but hazy evening across northern counties.
On Thursday, temperatures are expected to rise quickly during the morning under strong August sunshine. Winds will be mostly light and variable, and it will feel hot, locally very hot, with a maximum temperature of 34 °C.
Outlook for the Rest of the Week
The Met Office's outlook for Friday to Sunday suggests it will be cloudier and fresher from Friday with sunny spells and perhaps the odd shower on Saturday. Sunday is expected to be dry with sunny spells, before clouding over from the west late afternoon.
This amber warning is the latest in a series of extreme heat alerts this summer, as Birmingham and other parts of the UK experience prolonged periods of hot weather. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid sun exposure during peak hours, and check on vulnerable individuals.
