Birmingham City Council secured an emergency hygiene prohibition order at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday, July 16, closing Channi's Indian Restaurant on Stratford Road, Springfield, after discovering a severe cockroach infestation that posed an imminent risk to public health.
Infestation Details Found During Inspection
Environmental health officers inspected the premises on July 14 following a complaint. They found live and dead cockroaches throughout the kitchen area, including near food containers, on walls, and on shelving. Officers also discovered cockroach droppings and egg sacks capable of hatching between 30 and 40 insects each.
Environmental health officer Simon Garrison warned: "Cockroaches carry diseases such as e-coli and salmonella and they contaminate surfaces they come into contact with."
Legal Action and Closure
The court order prohibits the restaurant from operating until all health risks are eliminated. The restaurant remains closed and cannot reopen until it meets food safety standards. The council will conduct further inspections to ensure compliance.
