A nine-year-old boy is fighting for his life in hospital following a two-vehicle collision in Kings Norton, Birmingham. Police have charged a man in connection with the incident.
The crash occurred at the junction of Primrose Hill and Masshouse Lane, near Sisefield Road, at approximately 5:55pm on Tuesday, July 28. The boy was a passenger in a Renault Scenic that collided with a VW Tiguan.
Charges Filed
West Midlands Police confirmed on Thursday, July 30, that James Connors, 32, has been charged with two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified and without insurance. Connors was remanded in custody to appear before Birmingham magistrates.
Police said the boy was taken to Birmingham Children's Hospital in a critical condition, where he remains. The driver of the Renault, a woman in her 60s, was also injured and is recovering at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Ambulance Response
West Midlands Ambulance Service received multiple 999 calls and dispatched two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a trauma team, a critical care paramedic, and a Midlands Air Ambulance. Upon arrival, they found an off-duty nurse and police officers performing CPR on the boy.
An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “The team of ambulance staff quickly took over resuscitation efforts to administer advanced life support which successfully restarted his heart. The boy was rapidly conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights and sirens to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for further emergency care.”
The driver of the Renault was treated at the scene for non-serious injuries before being taken to hospital. The two occupants of the VW Tiguan—a man and a woman—sustained minor injuries and were left in the care of police.
Witness Accounts
A local resident who asked not to be named described the scene as shocking: “We came running out to help. The family (of the boy injured) is local, it's so sad.”
A shopkeeper added: “It was a big impact as a car travelled down Primrose Hill and crashed with another car going from Shannon Road to Sisefield Road. It was just awful. It's a very busy junction.”
