Energy supplier EDF has launched a £1million scheme called Heatwave Relief Packs to support vulnerable customers during UK heatwaves, offering free fans, energy bill credit and practical cooling equipment.
The initiative is designed to help up to 10,000 households who either struggle to keep their homes cool or worry about the cost of running fans and other cooling appliances.
What does the Heatwave Relief Pack include?
Eligible customers will receive tailored support worth up to £100, which may include energy-efficient desk or pedestal fans, handheld or neck fans, thermal blackout curtains, reflective window film, reusable hydration bottles, cooling towels, and up to £20 of electricity credit or vouchers to help cover the cost of running cooling appliances.
Practical advice and guidance on staying safe during hot weather is also part of the package, ensuring households know how to protect themselves when temperatures soar.
Why EDF is stepping in
Joe Souto, director of retail at EDF, said: “We’re increasingly seeing a summer version of the ‘heating or eating’ dilemma. Some vulnerable customers are reluctant to use fans or other cooling appliances because they’re worried about the cost.”
He added: “Nobody should have to choose between protecting their health and managing their household budget.”
The scheme comes as official data reveals the serious health impact of extreme heat in the UK. There were 1,311 heat-associated deaths in England during the summer of 2024, with the highest mortality rates among people aged 75 and over. Since 2020, more than 10,000 heat-associated deaths have been recorded across UK heat episodes, highlighting the growing risks posed by rising temperatures.
Who is most vulnerable?
EDF says older people, babies and young children, people living with cardiovascular or respiratory conditions, disabled people, those taking certain medications, and households facing financial hardship are among those most at risk during heatwaves.
This targeted support aims to remove the financial barrier that can stop vulnerable people from using cooling equipment, reducing the likelihood of heat-related illness and death.

EDF is delivering the packs in partnership with Charis, a charity that specialises in practical support for people in need. Jessica Taplin, chief executive of Charis, said: “We are proud to be working with EDF to deliver practical, targeted support that reaches people when they need it most.”
The Heatwave Relief Packs are part of a wider effort to address the growing impact of extreme heat on public health, as climate change makes heatwaves more frequent and intense across the UK.
