A retired headmaster has turned a family celebration into a fundraising opportunity for the speech and language therapy service that aided his recovery. Emyr Phillips, from Cilgerran, raised £500 during his wife Bethan's 70th birthday celebrations, with all proceeds going to the Speech and Language Therapy service at Glangwili Hospital.
A Personal Gesture of Gratitude
Emyr, a retired headmaster of 32 years, chose to fundraise for the Speech and Language Therapy service as a gesture of gratitude for the treatment he received from the team. He said: "The Speech and Language Therapists in Glangwili Hospital did their best to improve my throat after suffering from 'Tapis Syndrome' following surgical treatment on my heart."
Understanding Tapis Syndrome
Tapis Syndrome, though rare, can occur after cardiac surgery and affects the throat and swallowing. Emyr's experience highlights the importance of specialised therapy in post-operative recovery. The dedicated team at Glangwili Hospital provided him with tailored exercises and support to regain normal function.
Community Support and Fundraising
The £500 donation was collected during a birthday celebration for his wife Bethan, where guests contributed in lieu of gifts. This community effort reflects the strong bonds within Cilgerran and the widespread appreciation for local NHS services.
Paige Denyer, fundraising support officer for Hywel Dda Health Charities, expressed her gratitude: "Massive thank you to Emyr for taking the time to fundraise for the Speech and Language Therapy Team. Your donation is greatly appreciated."
How Charitable Donations Make a Difference
Denyer added: "The generous charitable donations we receive don't replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, and state-of-the-art equipment."
Such donations help enhance patient comfort and enable the purchase of advanced therapeutic tools that might not be covered by standard budgets. This extra support can significantly improve recovery experiences for patients like Emyr.
