The number of measles cases in the West Midlands has more than doubled this year, with 27 confirmed cases recorded in 2024 compared to 12 throughout the whole of 2023, prompting health officials to urge families to check their MMR vaccination status.
Sharp Increase in Cases
According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), the West Midlands has seen a significant rise in measles cases, with clusters reported in Birmingham and surrounding areas. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that can lead to serious complications, especially in young children, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body.
Importance of MMR Vaccination
The MMR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella, is the most effective way to prevent infection. Dr Naveed Syed, consultant in health protection at UKHSA West Midlands, said: “Measles is a highly infectious disease that can be serious, especially for young children and pregnant women. With cases rising, it is vital that families ensure they are up to date with their MMR vaccinations.” Two doses of the MMR vaccine are required for full protection, with the first dose typically given around 12 to 13 months of age and the second dose at around three years and four months.
How to Get Protected
Parents are advised to check their child’s red book or contact their GP surgery to confirm vaccination status. Anyone who has missed a dose can still catch up – the vaccine is free on the NHS. For adults, if you are unsure of your vaccination history, a blood test can check immunity. The UKHSA also recommends that before traveling to countries with high measles rates, individuals ensure they are fully vaccinated. With the rise in cases, staying protected is more important than ever.
