Andy Burnham £395 state pension rise planned for pre-1953 births
Andy Burnham £395 state pension increase for pre-1953

State pensioners are set to receive a 4.1 per cent uplift next April, thanks to Andy Burnham's commitment to the Triple Lock. This would see the basic state pension rise from £184 a week to £192.40, delivering a £7.50 weekly increase for those born before 1953 (women) or 1951 (men), amounting to £395 a year.

Triple Lock and Wage Growth

The state pension from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) rises each April under the Triple Lock, which guarantees an increase of either 2.5 per cent, inflation (currently 2.6 per cent), or wage growth (4.1 per cent). With wage growth outpacing other measures, it is likely to be the deciding factor for the upcoming rise.

Official data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that regular wage growth remained broadly stable in recent months, though private sector pay growth continued to ease. Public sector pay growth remains elevated due to the timing of the latest NHS pay awards, according to Liz McKeown, ONS director of economic statistics.

Impact and Reactions

Pat McFadden, the Labour Party work and pensions secretary, welcomed the figures, saying: “It’s encouraging to see signs of progress in the latest figures, with employment on the up and a continued fall in unemployment rate.” He highlighted government measures to overhaul the benefits system and support people into work, including a youth jobs grant to encourage businesses to hire young people.

“We will continue to reform welfare and employment support so that more people can live independently and restore opportunity across the country,” McFadden added.

Jake Finney, a senior economist at PwC UK, offered a cautious perspective: “On the face of it, the latest labour market report looks relatively benign. Unemployment, employment and inactivity remain broadly stable, while vacancies edged down but are essentially levelling off. The jobs market remains soft, but it isn’t collapsing.”

Future Outlook

The £395 annual increase applies to basic state pensioners, providing a tangible boost for older residents. With wage growth at 4.1 per cent, the Triple Lock mechanism ensures pensions keep pace with earnings, a key commitment for the government.
