Councillor quits Reform to sit as independent

Alan Feeney, a councillor serving on both Birmingham City Council and Solihull Council, has announced he is leaving Reform UK to sit as an independent. The decision, attributed to unspecified personal reasons, was confirmed on Monday, October 12.

Political journey and recent roles

Feeney represents Shard End on Birmingham City Council and Castle Bromwich in Solihull. He had previously resigned from Solihull's Conservative group in June 2025 and joined the breakaway Solihull Independents group before switching to Reform three months later.

In May of this year, he was elected to Birmingham City Council in Shard End. He also held the position of deputy leader of the Reform UK group on Solihull Council.

Announcement and statement

Feeney announced his departure this evening via a Facebook post. He wrote: "Hi friends. Just a bit of an update. Following discussions, I have mutually agreed with Reform UK that, for personal reasons, I will be leaving the party."

He added: "I will continue to represent the residents of Castle Bromwich and Shard End as an independent councillor, and would like to thank all my colleagues. As always, please feel free to contact me as you always have with any local issues."

Background and criticism

Feeney had previously faced criticism for standing in both a Solihull and a Birmingham ward at the same time. Questions were raised about whether he could give both areas his full attention.

His latest move means he will now sit as an independent on both authorities, continuing to represent the same wards he was elected to serve.
