Acting Chief Constable Scott Green of West Midlands Police has announced his intention to apply for the permanent position of chief constable when the role is advertised this summer. Speaking on BBC Radio WM's Ed James show, Green expressed his eagerness to lead the force on a permanent basis.
Green Confirms Application Plans
When asked about his aspirations, Green stated: "My answer to that in January/February was I'm trying to steady the ship and there's a job to be done today. My answer to that four months later is I will be applying for the role when it is advertised in the summer. I think the selection process will be in the autumn time."
Green, who took over as interim chief in January following controversy over the use of AI-generated evidence to ban Israeli football fans from a match, said he would "love it" if he were appointed. The previous chief constable, Craig Guildford, retired after admitting misleading MPs about the use of artificial intelligence.
Key Priorities for the Force
Green outlined three key areas he wants to be judged on in a year's time. First, he emphasised that the force should be measured by its actions and delivery, not just words. Second, he pledged to increase police visibility and public confidence through a new perception survey. Third, he stressed the importance of a preventative approach to policing, tackling root causes of issues early on.
"Whoever the next chief constable is has got to be the right and best person to lead the force and keep the public safe," Green added. "If that's me, I'd love it to be. If it's not me, their success matters to all of us."
