The government has unveiled a significant new support package for households struggling with ongoing financial pressures, with targeted £200 payments becoming available to eligible residents in Lincolnshire from next April.
Targeted Support for Vulnerable Households
Round 7 of the Government's Household Support Fund will operate from 1 April 2025 until 31 March 2026, with a substantial allocation of £9,631,345 specifically designated for Lincolnshire. The primary objective of this fund, according to local authorities, is to assist vulnerable households most in need with essential costs including food, energy bills, and other critical living expenses.
Eligibility Criteria for Lincoln Residents
To qualify for these vital payments, applicants must be residents of the City of Lincoln Council area and meet specific criteria. The council has confirmed that recent Universal Credit claimants are eligible, alongside those responsible for household bills. Additional requirements include having no savings and meeting one of three specific circumstances:
- Experiencing significant loss of household income due to circumstances beyond your control
- Having been migrated to Universal Credit within the last month
- Experiencing a household change within the last month that has resulted in reduced income
The council emphasises that applicants will need to provide evidence of these changes when submitting their online application.
Transition to New Support Framework
The Labour Party government has confirmed that the current Department for Work and Pensions Household Support Fund will conclude after 31 March 2026. Simultaneously, the government has announced the introduction of a new Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) from April 2026, designed to provide emergency support to eligible residents facing sudden financial difficulties.
Payment Structure and Limitations
Successful applicants considered most in need could receive voucher payments ranging from £50 to £200. These vouchers are specifically intended to assist with energy bill payments, pre-payment meter top-ups, and essential food shopping. The council has clarified that this represents a limited fund, and receiving an award is not guaranteed. Importantly, only one application per household will be considered during this wave of the scheme.
Application Process and Timelines
Once an application form has been submitted, residents should allow up to 28 days for a decision. Successful applicants will be notified via email or text message regarding their payment award. The council advises that if no communication is received after 28 days, applicants should contact them directly with their reference number for an update.
Important Distinctions and Alternative Support
Local authorities have made a crucial distinction about this scheme: it is not designed as an emergency response mechanism. Residents facing immediate crisis situations requiring food parcels are advised to contact the Welfare Team directly on 01522 873382. This team can facilitate referrals to local foodbanks for those in urgent need, ensuring that emergency support remains available through separate channels.
This announcement represents a significant development in the ongoing government response to cost of living challenges, providing targeted financial assistance to those most affected while establishing a framework for future support through the forthcoming Crisis and Resilience Fund.
