Drivers who need to report a health issue can now receive a decision up to 10 days faster by using an expanded digital service from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). The updated online system allows motorists to declare various health issues on the official GOV.UK website rather than relying on paper postal forms.
Cutting down administrative waiting times makes a noticeable difference when waiting on paperwork just to stay mobile and independent. Getting back on the road without unnecessary delays brings welcome relief to anyone navigating an ongoing medical update.
Government reports more than 60,000 drivers already using digital route
The Government reports that more than 60,000 motorists have already taken advantage of this digital route to keep their paperwork in order. Moving away from standard post keeps local journeys moving and stops people worrying about lost letters or lengthy queues.
The upgraded service lets motorists check roughly 1,600 health issues to see if their driving might be affected. In many situations, initial steps such as sending details to a healthcare professional happen within 24 hours.
Using the online portal also means drivers can monitor an application's status at any hour of the day. Those with multiple health conditions can even update their photograph and renew their licence in a single step.
Roads Minister and DVLA Chief Executive comment on improvements
Roads Minister Justin Madders said: "Drivers need to be able to report medical conditions quickly and easily. I understand their frustration, and that's why I've been working closely with the DVLA to deliver the services drivers receive. This new initiative will save people time and money so they can keep their licences up to date, and it's already working for thousands of customers using the service."
The Government highlighted that further developments are set to roll out to help older drivers renewing their licence at age 70, alongside first-time applicants. The digital system will also welcome back those whose driving entitlement was previously surrendered or revoked.
Tim Moss CBE, DVLA Chief Executive, said: "More than 60,000 drivers have already switched to our online medical service, saving time, avoiding paperwork and benefiting from a faster application process."
Benefits of using the online service
Drivers can save up to 10 days compared with paper applications, notify DVLA about multiple medical conditions, use the service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, avoid paper forms and postage costs, track the progress of their application online, renew a medical driving licence, and renew a medical licence and driving licence photo at the same time.
Taking away the stress of manual forms gives everyone a bit more control when managing their health and lifestyle updates. Anyone who needs to report an issue can visit the GOV.UK website.
