DVLA Reminds Over-70s to Renew Driving Licences Every 3 Years

People aged 70 and over must renew their driving licences every three years to remain legally allowed on the roads. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has launched a fresh campaign reminding older motorists to complete this essential paperwork.

The update process does not cost a penny and is designed to be completed easily by applicants. In a post shared on social media platform X, the DVLA said: "Are you 70 or over and due to renew your driving licence? Do it for free!" If you are already 70 or expect to reach this milestone birthday within the next 90 days, you can apply for the digital service. Submitting the paperwork via the official government website means your updated document should land on your doormat within a week.

The web-based platform is specifically designed for people living in England, Scotland, and Wales who meet standard fitness criteria. You can use this service to renew your British driving licence if you're 70 or over, or will be 70 within the next 90 days, and:

  • Your British licence has expired – or it's due to expire within 90 days
  • You're a resident of Great Britain (a separate service exists in Northern Ireland)
  • You meet the minimum eyesight requirement
  • You aren't disqualified from driving for any reason

The system allows you to submit a fresh digital photograph at the same time to ensure your records remain fully up to date. However, please note that any permissions to steer medium-sized vehicles or minibuses cannot be managed online and require a physical paper form instead.

If you are logging into the public portal for the very first time, it helps to gather a few essential personal details beforehand. To make the process run smoothly, you should ensure you have the following pieces of information close at hand:

  • An email address
  • Your residential addresses for the past three years
  • Your National Insurance number (if known)
  • A valid UK passport number (if you wish to update the licence photo)

The authority will issue an electronic message to confirm that your paperwork has been successfully received through the system. You might also receive an automated invitation to give feedback on how you found the digital process, though ignoring this is perfectly fine.

Many people worry about being grounded while their application is sitting in the queue, but safeguards are in place to keep you moving. You are permitted to continue driving while your licence is being renewed, as long as all of the following conditions are met:

  • You have your doctor's approval to continue driving
  • You held a valid licence
  • You comply with the conditions of your previous licence
  • Your application is less than one year old
  • Your last licence wasn't revoked or denied due to medical reasons
  • You're not currently disqualified
  • You weren't disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after June 1, 2013

For those who prefer traditional methods, a physical paper pack will be automatically delivered to your letterbox roughly three months before your birthday. Alternatively, you can apply by post using the D46P application form. The DVLA will automatically dispatch this form 90 days before your 70th birthday.

If this official package happens to go missing or gets misplaced, standard application packs are widely stocked across the country. Should you not have the D46P form to hand, you can use the D1 application for a driving licence form, which is available at most Post Offices. Your driving licence should arrive within three weeks.

While the postal system is highly reliable, traditional applications inevitably take a little bit longer to arrive. Bear in mind, however, that it may take longer if your medical or personal details require further verification.
