DWP Confirms Full List of 178 PIP Conditions as Claimants Hit 4 Million
DWP Lists 178 PIP Conditions as Claimants Hit 4 Million

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has published the complete list of 178 conditions that qualify for Personal Independence Payment (PIP), as the number of claimants surpasses four million. PIP is designed to assist with extra living costs for individuals with long-term physical or mental health conditions or disabilities that make everyday tasks or getting around difficult.

Claimant Numbers Rise

According to data released by the DWP on Tuesday, there were 4.01 million PIP claimants in April 2026, an increase of 266,175 (7%) from 3.74 million a year earlier. This marks a significant rise in the program's reach.

Political Response

Conservative shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately stated that the Conservatives would "review the entire PIP system, remove eligibility for low-level mental health PIP claims, rapidly assess hundreds of thousands of additional claims, and get Britain working again."
