Police Call Handlers Face Jail After Guilty Pleas

Two former Derbyshire Constabulary call handlers have been warned they could face custodial sentences after pleading guilty to serious offences at Leicester Crown Court.

Details of the Charges

Jessica Fitzhugh, 22, of Belper, admitted a computer misuse offence, while Ellie-Mae Doherty, 21, of Ripley, pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office. Doherty's charge involved unlawfully accessing data and failing to disclose her connections to individuals involved in crime to her employer.

The offences occurred during 2023 and 2024 while both women worked in the force's control room.

Court Proceedings

Both women entered their pleas on a basis that has yet to be reviewed by Crown Prosecution Service lawyers. This means they may face a Newton Hearing, where a judge determines whether their account of events is truthful or whether to sentence based on the prosecution's version.

The case was adjourned to allow for pre-sentence reports and for prosecutors to assess the need for a Newton Hearing. Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, August 28, before Judge Timothy Spencer KC.

Judge's Warning

Judge Spencer directly addressed the defendants, stating: "You are both in an extremely serious position. I'm quite sure your training made very plain to you that you should not have done what you did. You both pleaded guilty to serious offences, and you are both looking at going to prison. I don't want you to be under any illusions - I'm not saying you will, but a prison sentence is on the cards for both of you."

The judge will deliver sentences on August 28 at Leicester Crown Court.
