West Midlands Court Backlog Soars 88% in Justice Crisis

The West Midlands is experiencing a severe justice crisis as crown court backlogs have soared by 88 percent since 2016, creating a postcode lottery for victims and defendants. Unresolved cases in the region increased from 2,251 to 4,236, marking the largest percentage rise outside London for serious offences such as murder and rape.

Magistrates' Courts Also Affected

Magistrates' courts across the region have also seen backlogs jump by 70 percent since 2019, with approximately 380,000 open cases. West Mercia has become the worst area in the country for delays, where some cases take nearly three years to resolve.

Impact on Victims and Defendants

Law Society president Mark Evans stated: "This data shows a clear postcode lottery in access to timely justice. Cases are piling up and taking much longer to resolve." The delays cause "undue stress and uncertainty" for victims, witnesses, and defendants who face years of waiting for resolution.

The Law Society warns that without urgent government investment, access to justice will be further denied. The organization is calling for sustained investment in the justice system to repair what it describes as a "vital public service that we all rely on."
