The Welsh Government has opened a public consultation on its proposal to create a state-owned national energy company. The initiative aims to increase Welsh ownership of energy projects and enable communities, businesses, and public services to make better use of electricity and heat generated within Wales.
The proposed company would not replace existing energy suppliers or set household energy prices directly. However, the Plaid Cymru administration argues that greater Welsh ownership of energy projects could help reduce energy costs over time and ensure more revenue is reinvested in Welsh communities and public services.
Consultation details and objectives
Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, Adam Price, announced the consultation, which is open until November 30th this year. The Welsh Government is seeking views from individuals, communities, businesses, and organisations across Wales on how the company should operate and what it should deliver.
Price said: “Wales has huge potential to generate clean energy from our natural resources. We want to make sure the benefits of that energy are felt by people and communities across Wales, both in jobs and growth but eventually in lower bills too.”

The minister described Wales as being “on the verge of a second (or another) energy revolution” and stressed the importance of retaining more of the benefits within the country. The consultation document outlines how the company could support local ownership and create lasting value for future generations.
“This consultation is about how we can build a stronger Welsh energy sector, support local ownership and create lasting value for future generations. It’s about cheaper, cleaner energy that is made and owned in Wales,” Price added.
