Green Party Wins Handsworth Seat, Pledges to Restore Hope
Green Party Wins Handsworth, Pledges Hope

The Green Party has secured a surprise victory in the Handsworth ward, taking the seat from Labour in the Birmingham local elections. Ed Freshwater, the newly elected councillor, pledged to restore hope to the area, which he said has been unfairly maligned by the press.

Freshwater's Victory Speech

An elated Freshwater stated that his campaign focused on bringing 'hope back to Handsworth.' He emphasized the community's long-standing efforts to achieve this milestone. 'Handsworth has been defamed in the press for a long time and always done down, yet it is such a vibrant and positive place, and its residents are the absolute best,' he said.

Freshwater highlighted the area's rich history and the need to bring that hope to the forefront. He noted that the win was not easy, having lived and worked in Handsworth for 16 years. 'People in Handsworth have been ignored for much too long,' he added.

Context of the Election

The victory comes amid a broader shift in Birmingham's political landscape, with Labour strongholds falling to the Greens and Independents. Earlier this year, Reform and Conservative MP Robert Jenrick sparked controversy by describing the area as 'not integrated' and complaining about not seeing a white face during a visit.

Incumbent Green councillors Rob Grant (Kings Norton South) and Julien Pritchard (Druids Heath and Monyhull) both retained their seats. Grant expressed surprise at Labour's poor performance in certain areas.

Labour's Catastrophic Results

Reform is on track to become the largest party in Birmingham, according to feedback from the election count. Labour faces catastrophic losses, potentially ending with fewer than 10 councillors. Labour winners so far include Ray Goodwin (Castle Vale), Mick Brown (Gravelly Hill), Begum (Newtown), Shafique Shah (Heartlands), and Saddak Miah (Garretts Green).

Former Labour councillor Rinkal Shergill, who ran as an independent after being deselected, defeated Keshia Hamilton, daughter of Erdington MP Paulette Hamilton, to retain her seat.

Council Composition

Voters are electing 101 councillors across 69 wards to run the city council, the largest in the country. The council is currently Labour-run with 51 seats. The Conservatives hold 22 seats, the Liberal Democrats 12, and the Greens 2. Former Labour councillors who defected to stand as independents account for seven seats, along with three Harborne and Quinton independents. Two seats are vacant.
