Reform UK Accused of Breaking Walsall Mayor Tradition

Reform UK has been accused of 'breaking tradition' in the appointment of Walsall's Mayor, sparking criticism from opposition councillors who argued that seniority should have been respected.

Controversial Appointment

At the first full council meeting on Monday, May 18, Reform member Councillor Alan Fleming was appointed as Mayor of Walsall for the 2026/2027 municipal year. The nomination bypassed Councillor Khizar Hussain, deputy leader of the Walsall Community Independent (WCI) group, who was also nominated for the position.

Call for Tradition

WCI leader Councillor Aftab Nawaz called for traditions to be respected, noting that mayors have historically been chosen based on length of service rather than political affiliation. He stated: 'This chamber and this town is about tradition, convention, culture and heritage. We have elected mayors on a non-political basis, because they have served on this council for many many years. It's been a tradition that seniority takes precedent.'

Councillor Nawaz emphasised that the decision was not personal against Councillor Fleming, but rather a matter of principle. He pointed out that there were three councillors with longer service: Councillor Hussain, Conservative group leader Councillor Adrian Andrew, and Reform's Councillor Carl Creaney. He questioned whether the town should prioritise heritage or politics.

Vote Outcome

In a named vote, all opposition members and former Reform member Robin Perry, who was suspended hours before the meeting, voted for Councillor Hussain. All Reform members present voted for Councillor Fleming, securing his appointment.

Criticism from Conservatives

Councillor Rose Martin, Conservative ward member for Pelsall, said: 'If Reform had any respect for the town, they wouldn't have done this tonight.' She highlighted Walsall's rich history, including the mace given by King Charles II and connections to the Black Death and Tudor monarchs, stressing that the mayor's role is non-political and should respect the longest-serving councillor.
