Met Office warns UK faces more heatwaves before summer ends

The Met Office has issued a long-range forecast indicating that the UK is likely to experience further heatwaves before the summer concludes. This comes after a summer that has been among the hottest on record, featuring multiple heatwaves, wildfires, and a drought warning.

Forecast Predicts Above-Average Temperatures

According to the Met Office's long-range weather forecast, drier and more settled weather is slightly more likely towards the south and east of the UK. Temperatures are expected to be above average overall, with a chance that late-season hot spells or heatwaves develop, particularly in the south.

The forecast states: "Drier, more settled weather is slightly more likely towards the south and east. Temperatures are likely to be above average overall. There is a chance that late season hot spells or heatwaves develop, especially in the south."

Five Heatwaves Already in 2026

The UK has already experienced five significant heatwaves in 2026. The Met Office remains cautious about long-range predictions, but the strengthening El Niño, a warm weather pattern originating in the Pacific Ocean that influences seasons, increases the likelihood of more extreme temperatures.

Typically, September marks the beginning of meteorological autumn, but the cooler temperatures may be delayed this year.

Drought Conditions Persist

The weather predictions come as most of England and Wales endure drought conditions following what has been described as the driest July on record. Last week, Prime Minister Andy Burnham issued a major alert to phones across the country, warning against disposable BBQs, fireworks, and fire pits, calling Britain a giant "tinderbox".

Over the next five days, light rain is forecast across the country, offering a temporary respite from the intense temperatures.
