A gang has been sentenced to more than 50 years in prison for a revenge shooting in Birmingham. The victim, Shakeel Ali, in his 20s, was lured to a cul-de-sac in Moseley, where his car was rammed and he was shot twice at close range in August 2025.
The attackers attempted to drag him from his vehicle and were heard shouting 'shoot him in the face' before fleeing, leaving him for dead. The incident occurred on Woodnorton Drive shortly after 11:30pm on August 13.
Grudge and Planning
Humza Tufail held a grudge against Mr Ali, believing he had shot at his home ten months earlier while Tufail was in prison. Judge Heidi Kubik KC stated: "This offence was born out of a grudge against the victim Shakeel Ali, born by you Humza Tufail."
The group planned the attack after Tufail's release, choosing the cul-de-sac due to its lack of CCTV. They acquired a Vauxhall Insignia to ram Mr Ali's car, while Mohammed Aziz's Audi was parked nearby as a getaway vehicle. Tufail used a mutual acquaintance to lure Mr Ali to the location and provide updates on his arrival.
The Attack
As Mr Ali drove into the cul-de-sac, the group rammed his car from behind. Abdelhafez Mohammed shot Mr Ali twice at close range—once in the leg and once in the chest—while the victim was trapped in his driver's seat. Awil Mohammed held the door open as Tufail and Aziz attacked with a baseball bat. The group tried to drag Mr Ali out while shouting 'shoot him in the face.'
The incident lasted about four minutes, with part of it recorded by a resident. The group fled when another car arrived, leaving Mr Ali collapsed in his car. Items left at the scene linked the defendants to the attack.
Injuries and Sentencing
The shot to Mr Ali's chest pierced his lung, causing major blood loss requiring urgent treatment. The bullet remained lodged in his body as it was too dangerous to remove. All four men were originally charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence.
At Birmingham Crown Court on June 25, 2026, Judge Kubik sentenced the gang to a total of over 50 years. Humza Tufail, 25, of Mount Close, Moseley, received 13 years. Abdelhafez Mohammed, 27, of Bracebridge Road, Erdington, got 15 years and six months. Mohammed Aziz, 23, of Chilcote Close, Hall Green, was sentenced to 13 years and six months. Awil Mohammed, 25, of Thomas Crescent, Smethwick, who also admitted drug offences, received 16 years. All four were given extended five-year licence periods.
