Solihull Council Approves Home Extension Despite Neighbour Dispute
Solihull Extension Approved Despite Neighbour Row

Solihull Council has approved a contentious house extension in Millisons Wood despite fierce opposition from local residents. The planning committee unanimously backed the single-storey rear extension to a double garage in Bonneville Close on 27 May.

Neighbour Objections

Homeowner Lilian McGrath's application sparked six objections during public consultation. Residents accused her of running a commercial letting business that was 'eroding the character' of their quiet cul-de-sac. Objector Richard Pittock told councillors: 'We urge the committee to stand up for local residents.' He claimed the extension was a 'trojan horse' to legitimise further commercial development.

Homeowner's Defence

McGrath defended her proposal, saying it would create a 'hobby room' for her upholstery workshop. She admitted using two of her six bedrooms for letting but insisted: 'My dwelling is a family home first and foremost where I live with two of my sons.'

Planning officers found no breaches of planning rules regarding the commercial use. Council chairman Councillor Bob Grinsell acknowledged residents' concerns but noted the extension was 'not massive' and 'hidden.'

Approval with Conditions

The committee unanimously approved the application with strict conditions that the extension must only be used for ancillary purposes such as hobbies. The decision follows a long-running dispute between McGrath and her neighbours over the property's use.
