Up to 1,500 New Homes in Birmingham Regeneration

Major Housing Development Proposed for Former Birmingham Wheels Site

Up to 1,500 new homes could be built on a key regeneration site in Birmingham, as plans for a new neighbourhood on the former Birmingham Wheels site are unveiled. The development, which would also include new public spaces, shops, and community facilities, is part of the wider regeneration of the area.

Details of the Proposals

The proposals, submitted by developer St Joseph, a part of the Berkeley Group, outline a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom homes, with 35% designated as affordable housing. The site, located near the city centre and the planned HS2 interchange at Curzon Street, has been vacant since the Birmingham Wheels go-kart track closed in 2018.

Community and Economic Impact

According to St Joseph, the development would create around 1,500 construction jobs and provide a significant boost to the local economy. The plans also include new pedestrian and cycle routes, linking the new neighbourhood to the city centre and nearby areas. A public consultation is underway, with the final decision expected later this year.

Birmingham City Council has previously identified the site as a priority for regeneration, aiming to deliver much-needed housing in the city. The development is part of a broader strategy to create 10,000 new homes in the city centre by 2030.

Next Steps

Residents and stakeholders are being invited to comment on the proposals before a planning application is submitted. The developer has pledged to work closely with the community to refine the plans.
