Explosion in Monaco Leaves Casualties; Suspect Flees
A significant explosion has reportedly occurred in the upmarket holiday destination of Monaco, with casualties said to be "likely", according to officials. The incident, which prompted a large-scale response from emergency services, is believed to be the result of an alleged attack, with a suspect reportedly still at large today (June 29), reports the Daily Star.
According to French media outlet BRM, the explosion occurred after a man left a backpack on Reverend-Père-Louis-Folla Street at around 9pm local time. Monaco's Public Security confirmed that CCTV footage captured a man placing a backpack on the ground before walking away. Members of the public then entered the area moments before the explosion took place.
Casualties and Investigation
The precise number of casualties remains unclear at this stage. After fleeing the scene, the suspect reportedly made his way towards Beausoleil on foot, with Monaco's security forces currently in pursuit. According to AFP, authorities have confirmed that at least three people have been injured, with two of them said to be in a serious condition.
Nice Mayor Eric Ciotti confirmed via social media platform X that the incident is being investigated as a terror attack. He wrote: "The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco." He added: "Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilized."
