Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro has broken his silence in a startling manner following his dramatic capture by United States forces. The authoritarian figure was filmed being paraded through the Manhattan headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), handcuffed and flanked by two agents.
A Smiling Procession in Manhattan
In footage released by The White House's official rapid response account, a grinning Maduro attempted to speak English to officers during the arrest procession. He greeted them with "Happy New Year" and later said "good night", before questioning his own phrasing in Spanish. He asked, "Es buenas noches, no?" – meaning "That's good night, right?" – and then repeated the phrase with greater enthusiasm.
This surreal scene followed a daring military operation in the early hours of Saturday. U.S. special forces executed a mission named Absolute Resolve, extracting Maduro and his wife from their bedroom within a fortified military installation in Venezuela. The operation was backed by extensive air strikes, with Black Hawk helicopters bombarding Caracas during the capture.
From Caracas to a Brooklyn Cell
Following the high-stakes extraction, the couple were transported to a US military installation. Maduro was then moved to the DEA headquarters in New York, where he faced formal charges. The charges levelled against him include narco-terrorism and weapons violations, allegations he has repeatedly denied in the past.
After his processing in Manhattan, American media outlets reported that Maduro was transferred to the high-security Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. This prison has previously housed prominent inmates such as Ghislaine Maxwell and rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs. A photograph showed a blindfolded Maduro aboard the USS Iwo Jima, a massive aircraft carrier in the Caribbean, during his transit to New York.
Legal Proceedings Await
Both Nicolas Maduro and his spouse are now awaiting their next legal steps. They are scheduled to appear before a judge in New York on a date yet to be announced. This unprecedented event marks a significant escalation in the long-standing tensions between the US government and the Venezuelan leadership, setting the stage for a complex international legal battle.
