Belper teen wins 120km endurance ride

A fifteen-year-old rider from Belper has triumphed at a major international endurance event, securing first place in a demanding 120km ride on her first attempt at the distance. Hollie Brewell, riding her nine-year-old Arabian horse Cotswolds Shaquille, completed the challenging course in Norfolk, marking a significant step up from her previous maximum of 80km.

A First-Time Victory at 120km

The competition tested the fitness and stamina of both horse and rider, with strict veterinary checks before, during, and after the course to ensure peak health. Hollie managed her horse's pace and recovery throughout the route, keeping him in top condition. The achievement was made even more special when Cotswolds Shaquille was awarded the prestigious Best Condition rosette by the veterinary team.

Hollie, who was supported by family and friends, said: “I was incredibly nervous about how Sharqui would cope with the atmosphere, particularly as we had never experienced a mass start before.”

Horse Shines Barefoot

Remarkably, Cotswolds Shaquille completed the entire 120km journey barefoot, demonstrating impressive fitness without the need for hoof boots. Hollie added: “But he took it all in his stride. I still can’t quite believe we did it. From our previous maximum of 80km to completing our first 120km CER, he was simply amazing from start to finish. It was an experience I will never forget, and one that has made me incredibly proud of my horse.”

The pair's success highlights the powerful partnership and trust between the young rider and her horse. Hollie described the awards ceremony: “The crowd at the awards ceremony erupted into cheers and applause. I think Sharqui genuinely believed that everyone had gathered simply just to watch him. He was lapping up the attention and looked incredibly pleased with himself.”

Community Celebrates Local Success

This milestone marks a major step in the duo's endurance riding career, having previously competed only in events up to 80km. The local community in Belper has sent warm congratulations to Hollie on her fantastic success, celebrating the remarkable achievement of the young rider and her horse.
