First-Time Marathoner Zarine Dastur Takes on London Marathon for EACH
First-Time Marathoner Zarine Dastur Takes on London Marathon

A first-time marathon runner has admitted being out of her comfort zone but determined to go the distance as she prepares to take on one of the world's most iconic races.

Zarine Dastur, who works as a finance and operations manager at the University of Cambridge, will be among tens of thousands of runners lining up for Sunday's TCS London Marathon. Despite having entered the public ballot 'on a whim', Zarine secured a coveted place on her first attempt and has chosen to raise funds for East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH). Her total is already at nearly £1,400.

"This is my first and probably last marathon, so I'm starting and ending on a high," said the 44-year-old, who lives in Ely and was previously a diplomat at the Foreign Office.

"I feel good and, physically, as ready as I'll ever be. I've worked hard to reach this stage and been very committed to my training. That said, I'm completely out of my comfort zone. This isn't a natural place for me and I'm terrified, but I want to prove I can do it."

Zarine added: "It's a privilege to have gained a ballot place, so it's important to be as prepared as I can possibly be. I'm not putting myself under pressure by going for a particular time. I just want to complete the distance, and crossing the finish line is all that matters. I'm looking forward to the challenge of completing such an iconic event, and it'll be a huge achievement. I anticipate feeling quite emotional afterwards."

Zarine, who was born in the capital, was determined to use her good fortune to help others. "By gaining a ballot place, there was no obligation to raise funds," she said. "However, I wanted the pressure and deliberately made the decision to give myself extra motivation on the day. I wanted to support a local cause and that's why I chose EACH. It does such an amazing job supporting children and families when they need it most, and it's a charity that receives very little government funding. Every pound raised helps families have the best possible quality of life and makes every moment count. I've been blown away by people's generosity in sponsoring me. I'm so grateful."

Zarine will be cheered on by partner James - who recently completed the Brighton Marathon - and sister Katrina. The marathon also marks the beginning of a celebratory period for the couple, with James turning 40 in May and a holiday to Jamaica planned.
