Olympic 400m finalist Matt Hudson-Smith has declared his intention to make a statement when he competes at the Birmingham Grand Prix on Saturday, May 21. The event, held at the Alexander Stadium, marks his first major appearance on home turf since his impressive run at the Tokyo Olympics last summer.

Hudson-Smith, who hails from Wolverhampton, is eager to showcase his talent in front of a local crowd. The 27-year-old sprinter clocked a personal best of 44.46 seconds in Tokyo, where he finished fifth in the final. He believes the support of the home crowd will spur him on to even greater heights.
“I’m really excited to be back competing in Birmingham,” Hudson-Smith said. “The crowd here is always amazing, and I want to put on a show for them. I’ve been working hard in training, and I feel ready to run fast.”
Building on Olympic Success
The Birmingham Grand Prix is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold series, attracting top international athletes. Hudson-Smith will face stiff competition, including fellow British 400m runners and international stars. He sees the event as a crucial step in his preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Oregon.
“Every race is important, but racing at home adds extra motivation,” he added. “I want to send a message that I’m a contender for medals at the World Championships.”

Hudson-Smith’s return to Birmingham is also a homecoming of sorts; he trains at the University of Birmingham and has strong ties to the region. His coach, Tony Hadley, has been instrumental in his development, helping him refine his technique and endurance.
“Matt has been training exceptionally well,” Hadley said. “He’s in great shape, and I expect him to run a very competitive time on Saturday. The home crowd will definitely give him an extra boost.”
