Wirral swimmers delivered a series of standout performances at the Swim England National Championships in Sheffield, with Bethan James of Wirral Metro capturing three gold medals, while Hoylake's Freya Anderson helped England to relay silver medals at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Commonwealth Games success for Freya Anderson
At the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Freya Anderson from Hoylake was part of the England Ladies 4x100m and 4x200m Freestyle Relay teams, as well as the Mixed 4x100 Freestyle team, all of which claimed silver medals. Anderson's efforts capped a successful week that rounded off the domestic season for the region's swimmers.
Bethan James leads Wirral Metro medal haul
At the Swim England National Championships in Sheffield, Bethan James of Wirral Metro finished in outstanding form, achieving three personal bests. That earned her gold in the 200m Butterfly, 400m Freestyle, and 400m Individual Medley, a remarkable triple that highlighted her versatility and endurance across different disciplines.
Lauren Berry also impressed for Wirral Metro, taking gold in the 1500m Freestyle and silver in the 800m Freestyle. Harper Aspinall added another gold in the 400m Individual Medley, with one of two personal bests in the event. Ava Halliwell claimed bronze in the 200m Backstroke, while Ben Stephenson, Ellie Jackson, Mabel Wood, and Vivien Wilkinson all reached finals in their respective events.
City of Liverpool's George Pearce breaks barrier
George Pearce led the City of Liverpool team with a personal best in the heats of the 200m Backstroke, then went under the 2 minutes 15 seconds barrier for the first time when taking gold in the final. That performance marked a significant milestone for the young swimmer.
Matilda Bristow posted six personal bests, with her best result being silver in the 400m Individual Medley. Kate Roberts secured silver in the 200m Backstroke, while the 1500m Freestyle saw silvers for William Stamper, George Dixon, and James Graham, as well as a bronze for Ella Lambert. Finlay Byrne took silver in the 100m Backstroke with one of two personal bests, and Dominic Workman ensured bronze in the 100m Freestyle and 400m Individual Medley with two personal bests.
Macy Barker added a bronze in the 800m Freestyle, while Cole Hood posted two personal bests as he reached the finals of the 200m Backstroke and 200m Butterfly. Ethan Dwyer concluded his season by reaching the finals of the 200m and 400m Individual Medley, with Ollie Lambert reaching the final of the 200m Freestyle and Zac Patino reaching the final of the 400m Freestyle. A personal best for Albion Dobrushi secured a top-10 finish in the 800m Freestyle.
Hoylake and Bebington swimmers make their mark
It was a good week for Hoylake as Dior Beavan and Aaron Kewley both reached finals in their events. Meanwhile, Bebington's Sophia Hewlett enjoyed a fantastic end to a great season, taking sixth place in the 1500m Freestyle.
The performances across the Wirral clubs demonstrate the depth of talent in the region, with swimmers excelling at both national and international levels. As the domestic season concludes, these results bode well for future competitions, including upcoming youth championships.
