The Gym Group to Launch 75 New UK Gyms in Major Expansion Drive
The Gym Group to open 75 new UK gyms in 3 years

One of Britain's leading low-cost fitness chains, The Gym Group, has unveiled ambitious plans for significant national growth. The company is accelerating its expansion strategy, with the goal of opening 75 new gyms across the UK over the next three years.

Financial Strength Fuels Accelerated Rollout

The decision to increase its target from an initial forecast of 50 new sites follows a period of robust financial performance. In a pre-close trading update on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, the group reported a three percent year-on-year increase in like-for-like revenue.

This positive trend culminated in total revenue for 2025 rising by eight per cent to £244.9 million for the period up to December 31. This strong financial footing has positioned the company to fund its expansion organically.

Chief Executive Will Orr stated the firm sees "significant opportunities ahead in a market with structural growth tailwinds." He confirmed the group would accelerate its "organically funded rollout to around 75 new sites over the next three years," with 20 of these new branches set to open within this year alone.

Membership Surge and Demographic Trends

The expansion is underpinned by substantial growth in its member base. Over the course of 2025, the total number of memberships increased by four per cent, from 891,000 to 923,000.

A notable trend within this growth is the chain's popularity with younger fitness enthusiasts. Approximately 40 per cent of its members are from the Gen Z demographic, indicating a strong appeal to the next generation of gym-goers.

Will Orr attributed part of the company's success to its core offering, saying: "We entered the key new year member recruitment period well prepared, and our high-value, low-cost offering, enabled by an advantaged business model, continues to resonate strongly with consumers."

External Factors and Future Outlook

Interestingly, the company has also observed that the rising popularity of weight-loss medications, known as GLP-1s, is having a positive impact on its business. Mr Orr confirmed the brand was "absolutely" witnessing the effect of these drugs as a "tailwind and contributory factor."

He framed this development as an opportunity for the gym chain, adding that it allows them "to help people sustain the results that might come from GLP-1s" through exercise and fitness regimes.

With a clear strategy, strong finances, and favourable market conditions, The Gym Group's three-year plan marks one of the most significant expansions in the UK's competitive fitness sector.
