Aston Villa delivered a historic performance to secure their place in the Europa League final, thrashing Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the semi-final second leg at Villa Park. Unai Emery's side overturned a first-leg deficit with a flawless display, setting up a showdown in Istanbul against an opponent yet to be determined.
A Performance for the Ages
In stark contrast to their recent league form, every Villa player excelled, feeding off an electric atmosphere. Emi Buendia produced arguably his best performance for the club, contributing to the first two goals. He dribbled past Elliot Anderson before setting up Ollie Watkins for the equaliser, then calmly converted a penalty under immense pressure. Buendia said: 'I took responsibility. It was one of the most decisive penalties for the club in recent years, but I didn't feel pressure. I felt calm, I knew exactly what I wanted to do.'
Watkins was also outstanding, showcasing his hunger and movement. Despite a head injury earlier in the first half, he scored the crucial equaliser and never gave Nikola Milenkovic a moment's peace. Victor Lindelof, a surprise starter in midfield, was flawless, slotting into a back three when needed and excelling out of possession.
McGinn Epitomises Villa's Growth
Skipper John McGinn, already a club legend, scored a late double and spoke passionately about the team's journey. 'I feel that the way the club has grown, I feel like I have grown step by step alongside it,' he said. 'Unai Emery has been amazing, but so have all the managers I've played under. Steve Bruce made me believe I could compete in England, Dean Smith made me feel I could play in the Premier League, Steven Gerrard made me a leader, and Unai Emery has made me a better footballer.' McGinn added: 'European semi-finals don't come around often when you turn 31. It might be the last chance to get to a European final. Great celebrations at the end, but we have one game left to achieve what we want to achieve.'
Top Two Finish Proves Crucial
This was the biggest ever margin of victory by an English side against another English club in any European competition. Villa's 4-0 win also set a record for a Europa League semi-final since Manchester United's 6-2 win over Roma in 2020-21. The advantage of a home second leg, secured by finishing in the top two of the league phase, was pivotal. Villa's record at Villa Park is superb, and the atmosphere on Thursday was magical. A forgotten goal by Jamal Jimoh-Aloba against RB Salzburg, set up by Kadan Young, proved vital in securing that top-two finish. 'I have no shame in admitting to celebrating Brann's 100th-minute penalty against FC Midtjylland back in January,' a BirminghamLive correspondent noted, 'because the chance to finish in the top two was always going to be crucial.'
Villa now look ahead to the final in Istanbul, where they will aim for their greatest achievement in 44 years.
