Bayern open to Palhinha loan exit as Villa circle

Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has indicated that Joao Palhinha could leave the Bundesliga champions on loan before the summer transfer window closes. Aston Villa remain interested in signing the Portuguese midfielder, despite Eberl previously suggesting a move to the Champions League side was off.

Eberl clarified that talks between Bayern and Villa had not resulted in a permanent deal because the two clubs could not agree on a permanent transfer. Newcastle United had also been linked with Palhinha, but local reporters have downplayed the strength of their interest.

Eberl open to loan with substantial fee

In an update over the weekend, Eberl revealed that Bayern would consider letting Palhinha leave on loan, provided the loan fee is substantial. “I’ve never said that [only permanent]. We have to see. There are many different possibilities nowadays,” Eberl said. “It could be that someone says: we’re ready to pay a high loan fee, then you say: okay, we have to accept.”

He added: “I can’t push Joao to a particular club, and Joao can’t tell us: I’ll only go to a particular club, and the other club can’t tell us: I’ll only offer you this and nothing else. The talks take place between three parties. And it has to be a fit for everyone.”

Villa target Palhinha as Onana cover

Aston Villa are targeting Palhinha on loan to provide cover for Amadou Onana, who has been ruled out for most, if not all, of next season due to an ACL injury suffered during the World Cup. Villa are expected to continue their pursuit before the window closes.
