Former Birmingham City promotion winner Kieron Dowell is poised for a swift return to the Championship, with Hull City identifying the Rangers playmaker as a top target for the January transfer window.
From Blues Hero to Tigers Target
The 28-year-old attacking midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at St Andrew's, playing a pivotal role in the club's successful League One title campaign. Dowell scored five goals in 23 appearances across all competitions, helping Chris Davies's side secure automatic promotion alongside Wrexham and Charlton Athletic.
Birmingham had explored a permanent move for the player last summer, but a deal failed to materialise. Now, according to reports from HullLive, the Tigers are leading the chase and expect to complete a deal this month. Dowell has fallen out of favour at Ibrox under manager Danny Rohl and is out of contract in June 2026, making a January exit highly likely.
Dowell's Career Crossroads
A move to the MKM Stadium represents a fresh start for the Merseyside-born player, whose time in Scotland has been disappointing. Since joining Rangers in 2023, he has managed only two goals in 32 outings and has struggled to establish himself. A switch to Hull, who are currently level on points with the Championship play-off places, offers the prospect of regular first-team football.
Dowell began his career at Everton, graduating from their academy and enjoying loan spells at several English clubs including Nottingham Forest and Derby County, before permanent moves to Norwich City and then Rangers.
Birmingham's Current Focus
The news emerges as Birmingham City themselves build momentum under Chris Davies. A 3-2 home victory over Coventry City last time out, with a brace from Marvin Ducksch and a Lewis Koumas goal, has lifted some pressure. The Blues now sit 14th in the Championship table, seven points off the play-off spots.
Their immediate attention turns to the FA Cup, with an away trip to Cambridge United this weekend for a place in the fourth round. The club has until the end of the January window to conduct any further transfer business, both incoming and outgoing.
For Kieron Dowell, however, his immediate future appears to lie away from both Birmingham and Glasgow, with Hull City ready to offer the former England youth international a new platform in the second tier.
