Birmingham's Paik Avoids Surgery in Injury Boost

Birmingham City have been handed a significant boost with the news that midfielder Paik Seung-ho will not require surgery on the shoulder injury he sustained in the match against Middlesbrough.

Injury Update and Recovery Timeline

The South Korean international dislocated his shoulder after an awkward landing during an aerial challenge in the very first minute of the defeat to Middlesbrough two weeks ago. The incident forced him to withdraw from international duty with his national team.

Following scans and medical assessment, the club has confirmed that surgery will not be necessary. Manager Chris Davies expressed his relief, stating the club is "hoping it’s a matter of weeks, not months" before the player returns. This is crucial, as a months-long absence during the packed Championship schedule could see a player miss up to 15 matches.

Manager's Cautious Approach

While confident, Davies emphasised a careful rehabilitation process. "You have to be careful how quickly you return them because of the risk of re-injuring and the consequences of it," he explained.

He detailed that the next four to five days will be critical in assessing Paik's progress as he undergoes different physical challenges. The manager confirmed that Paik will definitely miss the upcoming fixture against Norwich City and his participation in the immediate matches thereafter remains in doubt.

Positive News on Other Fronts

Davies was able to provide more encouraging updates on other squad members. Goalkeeper James Beadle has returned to training after sustaining a head injury while on duty with the England under-21s. "James is good," Davies confirmed. "He’s gone through all of his processes back here and has been training, so he’s in a good place."

The news on Willum Willumsson is also promising, though the Icelander is not quite ready for a full return. The midfielder has been sidelined since August 29 after starting in the loss to Leicester City. "Willum is very close," Davies added. "He’s not quite there but he’s on that road to recovery and he shouldn’t be too long."
