Birmingham City are actively considering alternative left-wing targets as Brighton & Hove Albion have yet to decide whether Ibrahim Osman will be allowed to leave on loan again this window. The 21-year-old Ghana international impressed during his previous loan spell at St Andrew's, but Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has been impressed by the winger in pre-season, leaving Blues uncertain about their top target's availability.
Osman started Brighton's Europa Conference League play-off first leg against Tromso on Thursday night and could also feature against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday, suggesting he remains in Hurzeler's immediate plans. With the transfer window closing soon, Birmingham City are exploring alternatives to fill the left-wing vacancy that Osman's departure created.
Reyes Cleary: Rising League One Star
Reyes Cleary has emerged as a leading candidate after a breakout season with Barnsley in League One. The 22-year-old made 50 appearances across all competitions, contributing seven goals and 16 assists for the Tykes. His performances have attracted attention from numerous Championship clubs, which could complicate any potential deal.
Barnsley have reportedly placed a £8 million price tag on Cleary, a figure that may give second-tier clubs pause. The winger's form has made him one of the most sought-after young attackers in the division, but the financial outlay required could be a significant barrier for Birmingham City.
Jeremy Monga: Manchester City Talent Available on Loan
Jeremy Monga could become a loan option after his move from Leicester City to Manchester City. The 17-year-old impressed for a struggling Leicester side last season, even creating a goal against Birmingham City. Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca is reportedly undecided about whether to send the winger out on loan this season.
If Monga becomes available, Blues should seriously consider a move for the Englishman. He is a tricky winger similar to Osman, thriving in one-v-one situations out wide, and already has 37 senior appearances to his name. Monga is undoubtedly a huge talent who could become a force in the Championship.
Philip Otele: Basel Winger with Proven Goal Threat
Philip Otele has been linked with Birmingham City previously and shares stylistic similarities with Osman. The 27-year-old has attracted attention after two hugely impressive seasons with FC Basel, and would be a more natural fit to fill the gap Osman has left in the squad.
Otele would provide the speed that Blues currently lack in their front line. He also has an eye for goal, having scored nine times in each of his last two seasons with Basel. Many of his goals come from cutting inside onto his right foot and finding the far corner, a trait that could translate well to the Championship.
With Brighton yet to make a final decision on Osman, Birmingham City are keeping their options open. The club's recruitment team will need to act quickly if they are to secure a suitable replacement before the transfer window closes.
