Eiran Cashin Opens Up About Birmingham City Experience

Blackburn Rovers defender Eiran Cashin has revealed how his difficult loan spell at Birmingham City during the first half of the season provided crucial lessons that have helped him thrive at his new club. The 24-year-old returns to St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park on Good Friday for a Championship match with significant relegation implications for Blackburn.

From Birmingham Struggles to Blackburn Success

Cashin barely featured under Birmingham manager Chris Davies after a disastrous first league start against Sheffield Wednesday, where he was culpable for two goals in a 2-2 draw. Instead of crumbling under the criticism, the defender knuckled down and delivered professional performances in the weeks leading up to Brighton recalling and redistributing him to Blackburn in January.

"I think I've learned a lot about myself, both on and off the pitch, in the last year," Cashin told the Lancashire Telegraph. "Obviously, not playing as frequently as I wanted and then dealing with setbacks, dealing with praise, you have to stay level-headed. You can't get too high, you can't get too low."

Learning to Handle Criticism and Setbacks

The defender explained that his time at Birmingham taught him valuable lessons about dealing with adversity. "That's something off the pitch I've learned, and I've learned to deal with the criticism," Cashin said. "When I was at Derby, I felt like I was quite lucky in the sense that I got a lot of support. Very much what it's like being at Blackburn - a lot of love, a lot of support."

Cashin continued: "It's been good because you can ride that confidence and it can help you boost. But sometimes when you get those setbacks, when I first got one, I almost didn't know what to do. That was just growing up and learning about that."

Applying Lessons to Current Form

The defender has become a mainstay under Michael O'Neill at Ewood Park, with Blackburn easing relegation fears by taking four points from their past two games against high-flying Millwall and Middlesbrough. Cashin believes his Birmingham experience directly contributed to his current resilience.

"That's something I've taken and now I know how to deal with them," he said. "Obviously, the first league game when I came here, scoring the own goal in the first five minutes isn't ideal! But the fact that I went through that period of time where I was dealing with setbacks and overcoming them, I think that stood me in good stead."

The defender concluded: "Instead of sulk and moan or go hiding, I just rolled my sleeves up and got on with it. I think that's stood me in good stead moving forward."

A trip to Birmingham represents a daunting prospect for Championship teams, as Cashin well knows from his first-half experience with Chris Davies' squad. Friday's match carries particular importance for Blackburn as they continue their bid to avoid relegation from England's second tier.
