Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle has stressed that the squad must be "like a sponge" as they adapt to the methods of new head coach Cesar Peixoto. The Portuguese manager, appointed last month, has already made a significant impact on the training ground, demanding high intensity and quick tactical understanding from his players.
Absorbing New Tactics
Doyle, who came through the Wolves academy, spoke about the need for the entire team to embrace Peixoto's philosophy. "The manager wants us to learn quickly and apply what he teaches in games," Doyle said. "We have to be like a sponge and soak up all the information. It's a new system, new movements, and everyone is working hard to get it right."
The 21-year-old midfielder has been an integral part of the first-team squad this season, making 18 appearances in all competitions. Under Peixoto, Doyle has been deployed in a more advanced role, which he says requires different positioning and decision-making. "The positions are different from before, so I'm learning every day in training," he added.
Intense Training Sessions
Players have reported that Peixoto's training sessions are more demanding than under previous managers. According to Doyle, the focus has been on pressing triggers and quick transitions. "The intensity has gone up a level. We do a lot of drills where we have to react immediately when we lose the ball. It's about being switched on all the time," he explained.
Wolves have seen mixed results since Peixoto took over, with one win, two draws, and one loss in their first four league matches. The team sits 14th in the Premier League table, but Doyle believes the new approach will yield long-term benefits. "It takes time to adapt, but we can see the results coming. The gaffer has a clear plan," he said.
Team Unity
Doyle also praised the squad's unity during this period of transition. "Everyone is buying into it. The senior players are helping the younger ones, and we're all pushing in the same direction. It's a good atmosphere," he noted.
The midfielder's comments come ahead of Wolves' crucial fixture against Aston Villa on Saturday. Peixoto will be hoping his players can put the new tactics into practice and secure a much-needed victory.
