Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed that Joao Palhinha is free to leave this summer, opening the door for Aston Villa to reignite their interest in the Portugal international.
Eberl's confirmation on Palhinha's future
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Eberl made clear that Palhinha is among three players the Bundesliga champions are keen to offload. "With Sacha, Bryan and Joao, we have three players we are very open to letting go," he stated. "For those three, there will be no future at Bayern Munich. If one of them decides to stay here, it will be relatively tough and complicated for him because he will not play a major role."
The 30-year-old midfielder reported for Bayern's pre-season training but faces an uncertain future at the club.
Villa's midfield pursuit
Aston Villa opened initial talks with Bayern earlier this month and have maintained their interest, even after completing the signing of Joao Gomes. The club is keen to strengthen its midfield following the season-ending ACL injury suffered by Amadou Onana during the World Cup. Palhinha, who spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, is seen as a potential reinforcement.
Palhinha's difficult spell at Bayern
Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham in 2023 but endured a challenging first campaign under Vincent Kompany, struggling for regular game time. His loan move to Tottenham last season allowed him to regain some form, but Bayern's depth in midfield has left him surplus to requirements.
Villa's summer transfer activity
Villa have made three signings so far this summer, bringing in Johan Manzambi, Joao Gomes, and Alejandro Garnacho. Meanwhile, several players have departed: Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers, and Andres Garcia have left, while Lucas Digne is set to join Paris Saint-Germain. Leon Bailey is also expected to finalise a move to Hull City.
