Eight Ex-Birmingham City Players Released, One to MLS

Eight former Birmingham City players are now seeking new clubs after being released by various EFL teams, as retained lists continue to be published following Saturday's deadline. Among them is Alfie Chang, who left Blues in January to join Walsall.

Alfie Chang Among Those Released

Chang, 23, was part of Birmingham City's first team three years ago until a severe knee injury during training sidelined him for 17 months. He rebuilt his career with League Two loan spells at Walsall and Bristol Rovers before making a permanent move to the Saddlers in January. He is one of 12 players released by Walsall, who failed to secure promotion for the second consecutive season despite being top of League Two at Christmas.

Other Ex-Blues Players Released

Another former Blues midfielder, Charlie Lakin, has also been released by Walsall after two years at the club. Former Blues captain Michael Morrison has left Cambridge United after helping them earn promotion back to League One. Morrison, 38, spent the last three seasons with Cambridge.

Wes Harding has been released by Millwall, who lost in the Championship play-off semi-finals. Harding's final start for Millwall came against Blues at St Andrew's last November in a 4-0 defeat. Oxford United released one-time Blues loanee Przemysław Płacheta following their relegation from the Championship. Another former Blues loan man, Connor Mahoney, has been released by League Two side Barrow.

Andre Dozzell Moves to MLS

Andre Dozzell, who spent the second half of the 2023/24 season on loan at Blues and was part of the squad that was relegated to League One, has left Portsmouth at the end of his contract to join MLS side DC United. Dozzell has signed a two-year deal with DC United.

Ex-Blues youngsters Geraldo Bajrami and Josh Andrews have also been released by Burton Albion and Gillingham respectively. Meanwhile, Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Lyndon Dykes are in contract discussions with Blackpool and Charlton respectively after ending their Blues careers in January. Ryan Woods, who spent the 2021/22 season at St Andrew's, has been placed on the transfer list by League Two side Oldham Athletic.
