Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has expressed his satisfaction with Zion Suzuki's rapid adaptation to both the club and the Premier League, following the goalkeeper's second appearance for the team.
Suzuki kept a clean sheet against Hull City on Saturday night, helping Villa secure their first point of the season in a goalless draw at the MKM Stadium. The result came after a competitive opening fixture against Arsenal, where Suzuki had already shown promise with the ball at his feet.
Impressive distribution and key role in attack
Against Hull, Suzuki again excelled in distribution, playing a pivotal part in one of Villa's best chances in the second half. He sprayed a pass out to George Hemmings, who pulled the ball across to Emi Buendía, but the Argentine missed from close range, clearing the bar.
Statistics underline his composed display: Suzuki completed 33 of 37 attempted passes, including eight accurate long balls, and also made four saves during the match. His ability to build play from the back was a notable feature of Villa's approach.
Emery's assessment of Suzuki's progress
Speaking after the stalemate, Emery was asked for his assessment of Suzuki's adaptation to his side. "Very good. Last week he played his first match, and he played fantastic," Emery said. "We conceded one goal, but he played very well."
"Today, he did another step forward more with a clean sheet. He dominated with the ball possession, adding him to build up and help us to be patient," the manager added. "Then, sometimes as well, he did good long balls to our strikers and wingers. He also dominated when we needed some actions defensively and crosses, set-pieces and crosses."
Team understanding and positive progress
Emery also highlighted the broader improvement within the squad. "Our other players are also understanding better how we want to build the team in our idea, style and demands. It is very important, our mentality, how difficult it is to set a high standard," he said.
"We are in this way. Today, after the first two matches, we have been progressively better and took a step forward, not with the result, but how we played was positive," Emery concluded. The manager's comments reflect confidence in Suzuki's ongoing development as Villa look to build on their first point of the season.
