Unai Emery Sums Up Youri Tielemans in Three Words as Aston Villa Boss Hails Midfield Ace

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has expressed his delight with Youri Tielemans' progress, describing the Belgian midfielder as a leader, consistent, and intelligent player who has become integral to the team's success.

From Free Transfer to Key Player

Since joining Villa on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, Tielemans, now 28, has evolved into one of the Premier League's top midfielders. His standout performances earned him the club's player of the season award last term, and he is set to make his 238th Premier League appearance against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, along with his 124th across all competitions under Emery's management.

Emery reflected on Tielemans' journey, noting his initial adaptation period. "The first year, he was progressively adapting to us. He was playing less than he expected or we expected, but was in the process I planned with him," Emery explained. "And last year, he did a fantastic season, and this year, he had two injuries, and of course, that stopped him a little bit, but when he's available, he's performing like he did last year – so, so consistent, intelligent, on the field, he's a leader."

Leadership and Impact on the Team

Emery emphasized Tielemans' role in boosting team confidence and responsibility. "The teammates feel confidence, playing with him, and he is getting his responsibility strongly," he said. Tielemans' recent return from injury, just before the March international break against West Ham, has been a timely boost as Villa aim to secure Champions League qualification and progress in the Europa League.

In a recent match, Tielemans played 90 minutes, showcasing his leadership and importance. "I think he showed us again, his leadership and his importance in our team," Emery added, while also discussing the need to manage player fitness across multiple fixtures.

European Ambitions and Club Development

Speaking on Villa's objectives, Emery highlighted the significance of European competition. "Europe is very important. Of course, I think the Premier League is the first objective we have each year, but to play in Europe is something giving us a lot of possibilities to develop as a club, adding more objectives," he stated.

He praised the club's supporters, noting their enthusiasm during recent travels. "Yesterday, they were travelling to Bologna, 2,500 supporters, and I think they were so, so happy, so, so proud of us, and I appreciate, and we are really, everybody, thankful," Emery said. He emphasized the importance of enjoying the process and testing the team in different environments.

With only seven league matches remaining this season, Villa's focus is on maintaining their form and achieving their goals, with Tielemans playing a pivotal role in their campaign.
