A monumental weekend for sport saw Farnsfield Cricket Club etch its name into the history books by being crowned national champions after a truly spectacular performance in a prestigious national grassroots tournament final. The village is absolutely buzzing with pride, and it is safe to say that the celebrations will continue around the clubhouse for quite some time.
Historic Final Showdown
Representing the Bassetlaw and District Cricket League, Farnsfield CC faced off against Waltham CC, the Southern Champions, on Sunday, May 10, in the eagerly anticipated rearranged 2025 club championship showpiece. Tension was high, but the local lads showed nerves of steel from the very first ball.
Dominant Batting Performance
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Northern Champions set a formidable and aggressive tone. They racked up an impressive 159 for 4 in their allotted 20 overs, a target that always promised to test their opponents. The star of the show with the bat was undoubtedly Farnsfield’s captain, Joel Brett. Leading by example, Brett played an absolute masterclass of an innings, scoring a superb 70 not out. His unbeaten knock anchored the entire team's effort and rightfully earned him the coveted Player of the Match award.
Disciplined Bowling and Fielding
When it came time to defend their total, the Farnsfield squad did not let up. The bowling attack was incredibly tidy, suffocating the opposition's run rate and piling on the pressure. That disciplined bowling was backed up by some absolutely stellar catching and sharp fielding, which continually broke Waltham's momentum just as they tried to accelerate. Ultimately, they restricted Waltham’s run chase to 135 for 7, securing a fantastic 24-run victory and bringing the national trophy home.
A Milestone for Nottinghamshire Cricket
This historic win is a massive milestone for local cricket, as Farnsfield CC has become the first-ever team from Nottinghamshire to lift the trophy in this high-level national competition. It is a phenomenal achievement for a grassroots club, and it proves exactly what can be accomplished with dedication, teamwork, and a brilliant community behind you. Huge congratulations go to skipper Joel Brett, the players, the coaching staff, and all the volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes. You have done the whole of Nottinghamshire proud!
